The mullet cup, the Belgian equivalent of the Longueuil Cup, “a state of mind”
Quebec has its Longueuil Cup, Belgium, its mullet cup. Nostalgic of the 1980s or amateurs of self-deprecation happy to challenge the fashion, hundreds of fans of the “mule” participated Saturday in Belgium in a festival dedicated to this haircut associating clear temples and length in the neck.
For some, she recalls rocker Rod Stewart, for other MacGyver, the hero of the eponymous TV series.
The principle is especially to give free rein to the “dewanne”, the delirium or the loony in patois of the Borinage, a corner of the Walloon countryside worthy of the “far-west Belgian”, according to Damien Hubert, one of the organizers.
It is on a ground of the brewery of which he is co-founder, in Boussu, not far from Mons, that held the festival with the humor “15 e degree” completely assumed. With its barbers stands welcoming brave people ready to take the plunge.
“This cup is a state of mind, a declaration of independence […] the symbolic burden is really an assertion of self”, explained to AFP Damien Hubert, pointing out that the idea of festival came from a group of musician friends who decided to “carve the mullet” for a clip.
“To be very honest, I’m not sure there are many people who have ever found that very very pretty. We are clear on that, “he said.
The organizers claimed some 1,500 participants for what was “a first in Europe”. In 2018, a similar festival was organized in Australia.
Many visitors to Boussu were in their thirties or forties, fed TV series, concerts or football games from the 1980s and 90s, the flagship period of the mullet cup.
