The truth of Kore-eda: Deneuve, Binoche and the profession of actress
The Japanese Hirokazu Kore-eda’s new film The truth with Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke will open, in competition and world premiere, the 76th Venice Film Festival on August 28, the festival organizers announced Thursday.
“We shot this film in 10 weeks last fall in Paris, the cast is prestigious and the film is a little family story in a house. I tried to make my characters live in this little universe, with their lies, their pride, their regrets, their sadness, their joy and their reconciliations, “the filmmaker explained in a statement.
“For her first film shot outside her country, Kore-eda had the privilege of working with two French film stars,” said Mostra director Alberto Barbera.
“The encounter between the personal universe of the most important Japanese author of the moment and two actresses as beloved as Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche gave rise to a poetic reflection on the mother-daughter relationship and the complex profession of actress” , he added.
Used to cannes
Often called a filmmaker of the family, Kore-eda earned the consecration in 2018 by winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes for A family affair, his 13th feature film.
A regular at Cannes, he had presented Nobody Knows in 2004, Tel père, comme fils in 2013 (Jury Prize) and Notre petit sœur in 2015. He was competing at the 74th Venice Film Festival in 2017 with The Third Murder .
The 76th edition of the Venice International Film Festival will be held from August 28 to September 7.
