With “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, Tarantino can target the head of the box office?

With his new movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, Quentin Tarantino signs a love letter to American cinema of yesteryear and hopes to achieve what would now be considered a feat: to be successful at the box office without making another film of superheroes or nostalgic remake.
His new film takes place in 1969, at a time when the new Hollywood, a movement that revolutionized American cinema, and the counter-culture symbolized by Roman Polanski and Dennis Hopper budding.

This world of idealistic writers, faithful dubbing, spaghetti westerns and, more tragically, murderous hippies (Charles Manson and his sect) seduced the critics, especially thanks to the duo Leonardo DiCaprio / Brad Pitt (who respectively play a famous actor). and its lining).

The film was presented in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was warmly welcomed.

But Friday, when the film will be released in the United States – the release in France is scheduled for mid-August – it is another challenge that will await it: all round at the box office.

This year in the United States, movie recipes are down 7% from 2019, despite the phenomenal success of Avengers: Final Stage, which has become the most lucrative film of all time.

The great successes are only – and this is the case for several years now – adaptations, suites, remakes … Toy Story 4 , Aladdin, The Lion King , etc. No original scenario, but nothing that displeases Disney, which has alone touched 40% of North American box office revenue this year thanks to its successful franchises.

Charge Quentin Tarantino to change all that.

Hitchcock, Spielberg and Tarantino

The 56-year-old director is considered to be the last of the Mohicans in Los Angeles: popular among film buffs and the general public alike and able to succeed by putting on stage recognizable and original works – even if his cinema is full tributes and loans to the popular B series of the 1970s.

“He’s one of five directors whose name everyone automatically recognizes. We have Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Francis Coppola Ford … People who are not in the cinema know Tarantino, “says Paul Dergarabedian, expert of the analysis company Comscore.

Especially since the director of Pulp Fiction can here rely on two of the biggest stars of all time: Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, who would have agreed to lower his stamp to rework with Tarantino after Django unleashed (2012).

“It’s getting harder and harder to produce original content,” said Brad Pitt Monday at the glittering premiere of the movie at Hollywood’s famed TCL Chinese Theater.

“Whatever the public thinks of the film, they know that they have left for a unique and incredible experience,” said a DiCaprio inevitably in promo mode.

“That’s why people come back,” he assured reporters.

How many will be locked in the dark this week? One thing is certain: the $ 190 million gleaned by The Lion King last weekend is out of reach.

This should be the penultimate time of his career that Tarantino will scrutinize the results of one of his films.

He explained that he would retire after his 10th film. Once upon a time in Hollywood is the ninth of them.
