Aggression at McDonald’s: an almost similar modus operandi
The man accused of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl in a Mcdonald’s restaurant in Granby on Monday had acted in a similar way in a previous assault, La Voix de l’Est learned.
C hristopher Dégarie Giroux, 22, pleaded guilty to sexual abuse on a minor in May 2018 in Longueuil.
He was then sentenced to 90 days in jail on an intermittent basis and a 10-year registration in the Sex Offender Registry. He was also prohibited from possessing weapons and approaching any minor in perpetuity.
However, the circumstances of this previous offense are very similar to what happened in Granby.
According to a source close to the file, Mr. Dégarie Giroux had touched a minor 14 years that he also did not know. The offense occurred, however, in a residential building rather than in a restaurant.
“He touched her over her clothes, and it was very brief,” says one.
The man today living in Granby – but currently detained – has obviously not learned of his sentence.
He was arrested shortly after his alleged recidivism last Monday. According to the Granby police, he followed a girl in the restroom at Denison Street East, around 10 pm, before assaulting her.
Worried about his prolonged absence, the victim’s father burst into the bathroom. Mr. Dégarie Giroux ran away after a scramble.
He appeared at the courthouse the following day and faces charges of sexual assault, sexual interference and non-compliance.
For the Crown, Valérie Simard-Croteau opposed his release on the basis of his past and the nature of the charges.
Me Mireille Leblanc, in defense, asked that his client undergo a psychiatric evaluation on his ability to understand the judicial process. In the meantime, he is forbidden to communicate with the victim or his relatives.
Mr. Dégarie Giroux suffers from an intellectual disability and uses drugs. In the past, he has also been found guilty of robbery and obstruction of police work.
The case has been postponed to July 22nd.
