USA support Ukraine in establishing a unified Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. This was stated by the United States Ambassador at large for international religious freedom, Samuel Brownback during a meeting with President Petro Poroshenko in Kiev.
“In turn, Ambassador Brownback assured that the United States will continue to support Ukraine in the struggle for the restoration of the sovereignty and territorial integrity and the right to have a United Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church”, — said the press service of the AP.
Poroshenko briefed the Ambassador on the steps that are carried out towards the creation of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. The President thanked the American side for supporting Ukraine in this process.
The President drew the attention of the US representative to numerous testimonies of violations of rights and freedoms, in particular religious freedom, in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories. The two sides stressed the need for tough response to systemic persecution in the occupied Donbas and Crimea, the Ukrainian faithful of the Kyivan Patriarchate, the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, representatives of other faiths.
Earlier, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said that the decision on the granting of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church accepted and the process started.
