“From the moment of signing by Donald trump of the law on sanctions against Russia on 2 August 2017, Washington has repeatedly tried to persuade the Europeans to stop the pipeline construction. For a long time, the US tried to convince the Germans, as the main promoters of the “Nord stream-2”, that this project is not just impractical and not in the interests of the EU, but also dangerous. Such approaches United States is absolutely justified, because of the pipeline yet, but in transatlantic and European formats was split. Thus, the US after a session of “therapy”, go to the session “surgery””

The expert did not rule out that the German company who build an offensive pipeline can refuse to participate in the project because of the American sanctions will not allow them to implement other lucrative contracts.

“Gazprom is technically and technologically not able to build “Nord stream-2”. Therefore, the Russians signed a contract with several hundred contractors and subcontractors, which assemble and stack the tube on the bottom of the Baltic sea. Such companies in the world, and they have many other rare orders for the construction of underwater oil and gas pipelines at industrial sites in the EU. Realizing that US sanctions could harm their interests, they can stop the construction of the “Nord stream-2” in order not to lose business in other projects. Getting into the “black list” of the USA is unprofitable because later it is very difficult to get out”

Michael Potter also believes that the company’s contractors can continue to build the pipeline, subject to payment of compensation. However, according to the expert, such compensation can become billions and the German government is not interested to pay them. In addition, some German officials and politicians see the project’s own commercial interest, fueled by hidden corruption. This factor, according to analysts, threatens the European and Euro-Atlantic unity in the face of the Kremlin.

“Nord stream-2” — a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea over a length of 1224 km Is an extension of the current “Nord stream”. After the launch of the second phase, planned throughput of the two threads will be 55 billion m3 of gas per year.

Ukraine opposes the construction of “Nord stream-2”, because the fear of losing the transit of Russian gas through its own gas transportation system. However, Germany and several European countries have approved the construction of a gas pipeline, as perceived in the project of commercial interest.

Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel considered the pipeline “Nord stream-2” is not as critical as official Kiev. However, after an armed attack and capture of Russia Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait, the fraction in the Bundestag, Merkel noted that Russia may use the “Nord stream-2” to destabilize Ukraine and divide Europe and the transatlantic partners.

The U.S. state Department hope that Europe will refuse from the construction of the controversial pipeline on the open aggression of Russia near the Azov sea and the Kremlin’s refusal of direct talks with Ukraine.

However, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany Heiko Maas said that Germany’s refusal of the pipeline “Nord stream-2” will not cause him to stop, but will weaken the ability to prove the necessity of gas supplies through Ukraine. According to him, Russia will defend the construction of the pipeline even if the German company will be released from the project.

At the same time, the U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell warned German companies about the likelihood of sanctions for their part in the construction of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”. He explained in particular the risk of a large-scale invasion of Russia on Ukrainian territory and undermine security in Europe.
