The summit of the European Union is planning to help the Ukrainian regions affected by the blocking of the Russian ports in the Azov sea. We are talking about financial and other activities.
“The EU is ready to take measures to further strengthen their support to the affected regions of Ukraine”, — reads the statement of the summit, which will publish on Thursday, reports Euractiv.
However, the EU was unable to agree on new sanctions against Russia to increase pressure on the state-aggressor. Diplomats expect the continuation of existing sanctions.
Note that the liberation of the Kerch Strait can increase the volume of transshipment of hundreds of thousands of tons. Earlier, the Ministry of infrastructure announced the release of the Kerch channel. So, as of 3 December 2018 passage through the Kerch Strait in the direction of Ukrainian ports in the sea of Azov at the entrance was expecting 17 vessels, out — one, nine ships were at berth in ports. Only in the Azov sea has blocked more than 170 vessels.
In early December the United States announced new sanctions against Russia by the US and the EU. Note that German Chancellor Angela Merkel for the first time has supported tougher sanctions on Russia for actions in Azov. It was reported that the EU will create a new mechanism of restrictions aimed against Russia. At the same time, PACE supported the mitigation of anti-Russian sanctions to overcome the crisis.
