Minister of energy of Russia Alexander Novak said that Russia is ready for tripartite negotiations on the settlement of Ukraine’s gas supply. Such a meeting could take place yet this year.
According to the Russian edition of “Economics today”, Novak stressed that “Russia stands for peaceful settlement of the situation. However, the final decision will depend on the Ukrainian side.” We are talking about the denial of the claim to “Gazprom” from outside “Naftogaz”, recorded in the decision of the Stockholm arbitration. Also Russia does not want to guarantee in the future any certain volume of gas pumped through Ukraine. Novak also said that the trilateral gas talks involving Russia, Ukraine and representatives of the European Commission can go to the end of the year or in January 2019. By the beginning of substantive negotiations the issue of transit fuel will make up for discussion of experts, and after that there will be a Ministerial meeting.
Earlier, Moscow refused to participate in the EU negotiations, underlining that this is a bilateral matter that does not require an intermediary. Subsequently, it was reported that the European Commission is awaiting commencement of negotiations on gas transit between Ukraine and Russia brokered by the EU in January. In the Ukrainian “Naftogaz” does not exclude that Russia may not sign in 2019, a new contract for gas transit through Ukraine. The Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov has said that Russia is preparing a new agreement on gas transit through Ukraine. Energy expert Karel Hirman insists that the new contract for the transit should provide for amounts not less than the “Nord stream-2”. In “Naftogaz” also called the two ways to stop the “Nord stream-2”, one of them is the lawsuit against Gazprom due to the cessation of transit of Russian gas after 2020.
