Soda affects kidney function − scientists

Газировка негативно влияет на работу почек − ученые

Excessive soda pop and other sweet beverages is associated with the occurrence of chronic kidney disease.

Doctors have found that drinking large quantities of carbonated soft drinks not only leads to the development of obesity, but also significantly increases the risk to get severe kidney disease. The article with the findings of scientists was published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

“We know almost nothing about how the various soft drinks available in the market today, affect human health. For example, we have almost no data on what their types are most strongly contribute to the development of kidney disease. We have filled this gap,” said Casey Rebholz from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA.

According to who, in the world there is a global obesity epidemic. Every third inhabitant of the planet suffers from excess pounds, and about 15% from severe forms of obesity.

About 47% of diseases, for example atherosclerosis, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes and cancer, are associated with similar metabolic disorders.

Doctors believe that the main reason for this epidemic is the popularity of sugar and sugary drinks, which especially increased in the last two decades.

Previously, scientists from the United States found that excessive consumption of soft drinks leads to the death of approximately 184 thousand people every year. Most of these deaths occur in Latin America and the United States.

Rebholz, and her colleagues found another negative consequence of the overuse of soda.

They watched the lives of approximately three thousand African Americans in the past 15 years. During this time approximately 6% of them were victims of chronic kidney disease that has allowed scientists to see what risk factors most influenced their development.

As it turned out, study participants who drank a lot of soda and other sugary drinks, on average, 61% more likely to become victims of kidney failure and chronic kidney disease than African Americans, almost do not use them.

According to scientists, all this once again confirms that the turnover sweetened drinks should legally restrict or at least to introduce a tax that increases their cost.

Recall, last year scientists said that permanent lower prices on soda and other sugary drinks is one of the major threats to the health of all mankind.
