The European Parliament adopted a resolution demanding the release of Ukrainian Oleg Sentsov and other political prisoners held in Russia.
For this decision voted 485 MEPs. It was opposed by 76, 66 representatives of the European Parliament abstained.
“The European Parliament demands from the Russian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Oleg Sentsov and more than 70 wrongful withholding of Ukrainian citizens in Russia and on the Crimean Peninsula”, – the document says.
The participants of the debate called for greater pressure on the Kremlin, and EU leaders and diplomats were asked to refrain from trips to Russia for the world championship-2018 on football.
In the meeting room of the European Parliament a number of MPs were holding portraits of Sentsov and other political prisoners in protest against their illegal detention in Russian prisons.
The document specifies the names of all Ukrainian political prisoners, including Alexander Kolchenko and Vladimir Baloga.
Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin thanked the European Parliament for the support of Ukraine.
Responded to the adoption of the resolution and President Petro Poroshenko.
“Ukraine and the World remember and fight for the liberation of every Ukrainian political prisoner. The football world Cup in Russia could be a good opportunity for a humanitarian gesture but apparently human rights are not included in the vital interests of the Kremlin”, – he wrote.
