The American Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell sent out to companies from Germany a letter in which he warned them about sanctions from the United States for the support of construction of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”. He explained in particular the risk of the invasion of Russia to Ukraine and undermine security in Europe.
“We stress that if companies that support the Russian energy sector, will participate in any (relevant projects), it may lead to the imposition of sanctions”, — quotes the letter Grenelle German newspaper Bild.
The Ambassador noted that if due to the launch of Nord Stream-2 and the “Turkish stream” gas transit through Ukraine will become redundant, then Kiev will lose importance in the field of security policy, and therefore will increase the possibility of intervention by the Kremlin.
Many German companies consider these letters to blackmail, but the representative of the Ambassador stressed that “letters should be perceived not as a threat but as a clear expression of the political position of the United States”.
Under the sanctions can get and other European firms, the US government reminded the participants of construction of the gas pipeline “Nord stream – 2” about the consequences. Washington promised sanctions companies Allseas (Switzerland) and Saipem (Italy), if they do not come from the Russian project. However, despite pressure from the USA the project of the pipeline “Nord stream-2” is stopped. This was stated by the European Commissioner for budget günther Oettinger.
Nord stream-2″ — a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany under the Baltic sea over a length of 1224 km Is an extension of the current “Nord stream”. After the launch of the second phase, planned throughput of the two threads will be 55 billion m3 of gas per year.
Builds the pipeline of the Russian Gazprom jointly with the European Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell and Wintershall. The pipeline can earn up to the end of 2019.
Ukraine opposes the construction of “Nord stream-2”, because the fear of losing the transit of Russian gas through its own gas transportation system. However, Germany is involved in the construction of the pipeline and a number of European countries have provided permission for its construction.
Earlier, Angela Merkel considered the pipeline “Nord stream-2” is not as critical as official Kiev. However, after an armed attack and capture of Russia Ukrainian ships in the area of the Azov sea, the fraction of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Bundestag, said that Russia can use the “Nord stream-2” to destabilize Ukraine and divide Europe and the transatlantic partners.
The U.S. state Department hope that Europe will refuse from the construction of the controversial pipeline on the open aggression of Russia near the Azov sea and the Kremlin’s refusal of direct talks with Ukraine.
However, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany Heiko Maas said that Germany’s refusal of the pipeline “Nord stream-2” will not cause him to stop, but will weaken the ability to prove the necessity of gas supplies through Ukraine. According to him, Russia will defend the necessity to build the pipeline even if the German company will be released from the project.
Earlier “Naftogaz of Ukraine” has found a way to stop the construction of the “Nord stream-2” and “Gazprom” has decided to reduce significantly funding for the project.
In late December Germany called the main condition for the continuation of construction of the “Nord stream-2”. Laying of gas pipeline Nord Stream-2 will be possible, if it will be stored in “key interests of Ukraine”.
